Photomarathon: Sheffield Round Walk

About

While the main Photomarathon Sheffield event is on a break for 2021, you’re invited to join in a mini edition at your own pace this July. This time, it’s a special Sheffield Round Walk edition.

The Photomarathon is a photography adventure for all ages. It encourages people to explore Sheffield with curiosity, creativity and spontaneity, camera in hand.

For this edition, you are encouraged to get out and enjoy the nature on the edge of our city – and to have some creative fun at the same time. The focus is the Sheffield Round Walk, a 15-mile route in the southwest of the city with paths rich in nature and history.

Don't worry, we don't expect you to walk the whole route! You can take your photos at any point on the route – it's entirely up to you.

Unlike the usual Photomarathon event, this time you have a whole month to join in.

The challenge:
The 4 photo topics will be announced on Thursday 1 July 2021. Take a photo inspired by any or all of the topics on your phone/camera. You can pick just 1 or 2 topics, or do all 4.

It’s not a race. And there’s no set direction – you can take your photos anywhere in the Sheffield Round Walk area. See this map for details and look out for the walk’s acorn signposts.

If you're out in the Round Walk area with your family, download the activity sheet for a little sight-spotting and colouring fun.

How to enter:

Enter online. Go to this page for the photo upload link in July, or enter using Instagram with the tag #PhotomarathonSHF.

Entries close at 11pm on Saturday 31 July 2021.

There’ll be a prize for the winner!

Rules:
Since the organiser won't see participants in person this time, they can't be so strict on the rules. But if you want to stay true to the spirit of the original challenge:

Take the photos in order

Don't edit them

Only submit photos taken in July 2021 somewhere (anywhere!) on the Sheffield Round Walk route

Other guidelines:

If you take a photo of someone, let them know it may appear in an exhibition or online, and make sure they’re okay with that

Copyright remains with the photographer. By entering the competition, you give permission for Photomarathon Sheffield to use, publicly display and distribute your images and name in print and online, including in exhibitions, social media, promotional materials and publications.

As always with Photomarathon Sheffield events, we’re looking for creativity, curiosity, and spontaneity – it’s about your unique interpretations of the topics more than your technical knowhow.

About the Sheffield Round Walk
Four sections make up the Round Walk, each with their own personality. The family-friendly Porter Valley is the first, followed by the wilder Limb Valley and tree-heavy scenery of the Sheaf Valley, with the more suburban Gleadless Valley to finish. They take in pretty parks, ancient woodlands, trickling streams and panoramic views, as well as industrial remains and the sights and sounds of bustling suburbs.

Our Favourite Places recently published Our Favourite Places: Sheffield Round Walk, a guidebook to the route, following the walk's distinctive acorn waymarker and pointing out independent cafes and shops, heritage sites and worthwhile detours along the way.

Happy snapping!

Photomarathon Sheffield: Round Walk is part of Sheffield Libraries’ Wild Summer season.
