My Adventure

Running Wild in the City (3 Day)

Running Wild in the City (3 Day)

Runners of Sheffield will confidently tell you it’s the best city for running, full-stop!  Just be careful if they tell you a route is ‘Sheffield flat’, it may be ‘flat’ to their hill accustomed legs, but could well still involve some serious incline!

However, don’t be put off by the hills. It’s no surprise being The Outdoor City, that Sheffield is an amazing place for runners of all abilities, with gentle park routes to lung-busting climbs heading out to the running routes of the Peak District and everything in-between.

Day 1

The Outdoor City Running Routes

Red and Black Routes

The perfect routes to follow when you’re first finding your way in the city are the way marked Outdoor City running routes.

The red and black routes are the most challenging routes and take you out of the city and quickly onto the running routes of the Peak District, with stunning views, technical terrain and speedy descents.

Morning

Take the 97 or 98 bus from the city centre to Millhouses Park, from here it’s a quick warm up jog over to the discovery centre in Eccelsall Woods and the start of the run routes.

Take your choice of black or red route and be rewarded with a beautiful run with either.

The circular routes will finish back at the discovery centre, where a welcome and well deserved coffee and cake awaits!

Late Afternoon – Evening

After getting refreshed in your hotel, head out for a culture hit at the Site Gallery, (Sheffield's international contemporary art space, specialising in moving image, new media and performance.)  and/or take in a movie at the Showroom. (  Sheffield's independent cinema, cafe bar and creative workspace)

Stay out for food options in the showroom bar and a few drinks, and/or take a short walk to Triple Point Brewery.

Day 2 -  Sheffield Half Marathon Route

Morning

Unearth Sheffield's past on the Town Walk -  A 2 mile loop taking in some historic spots of the city and passing some great cafes for breakfast/brunch too!

Afternoon

Sheffield Half Marathon

The city’s half marathon route is the perfect run to show off Sheffield’s profile as The Outdoor City, starting in the bustle of the city centre, you quickly begin the climb out of the city to take in stunning views of the Peak District.

It’s certainly a runnable route on non-race days, however if you want to join the crowds of fun runners and serious club runners, race day is usually the first or second weekend in April.

The route begins with a flat section taking you from the city centre to hunters bar on Eccelsall Road, then the climb up out of the city takes you to ringlinglow – if you’re taking the route at a leisurely pace, there’s the Norfolk Arms at the top of the climb for refreshments before the cruise back down into the city.

The route winds back into the City Centre via Eccelsall Road, there’s plenty of places to stop the route a little early for coffee, ice-cream or the refreshment of your choice!

Evening - Broomhill

What makes a city the best city for running? Besides picturesque parks, challenging Strava segments and easy access to the running routes of the Peak District?  A good selection of places to crash out and enjoy some ‘light’ refreshments of course and Broomhill is the perfect area for this, with a variety of cool eating and drinking venues.

The York - The York have been serving home cooked food, fine wines and perfect ales to the masses since September 2010. You can make yourself at home in front of our open fire, grab a table amongst the curiosities or relax in our snug. In the summer our enclosed garden is a welcome retreat from the bustle of Broomhill.

Thyme cafe - Thyme cafe celebrated its milestone 15 year birthday in 2018, thanks to its reputation as Sheffield’s most vibrant casual-dining experience. We are well-known for creating unique food with big, bold flavours

Proove Pizza - Because our guys make great dough. Because we use the freshest, best quality ingredients. Because we make it the Napoli way (which we think is the best).Because we love what we do! And because, we know you will love it too!

LokantaLokanta is Turkish for neighbourhood restaurant, and the aim at ours is to bring the best of modern Turkey to the table in South Yorkshire.

Day 3 – Sunset Run around Burbage

Morning – Take it easy in the morning with breakfast at one fo the city centre cafes, why not try Tamper Coffee.

Afternoon -  Catch the 218, 271or 272 bus from the city centre bus exchange or the 271/272 from Eccelsall Road and the 218 from Abbeydale Road.  Stay on the bus along the picturesque ride until you reach the popular tourist village of Hathersage.

There are plenty of outdoor shops and cafes in Hathersage to keep you entertained for an afternoon. There’s also an open aired, heated swimming pool in Hathersage that is perfect for soothing the muscles and loosening the limbs, take a look at our I Always Need to Swim itinerary for full details and wild swimming locations.

Late Afternoon/Early Evening

 A sun-set run around Burbage

You can either take the bus back the way you came to the start of the run at Foxhouse, or a warm up hike/jog up to surprise view and through Paddley Gourge .

Route around Burbage Valley

The beauty of Burbage valley is you can take this run a number of ways to suit your mood.  The ‘full’ route runs around the outer rim of the valley, but can be made easier by using the path up the middle of the valley to cut out either side, both will test the legs a little, especailly if you include the Higor Tor climb.

Finish with beer and food in the Fox House Pub, then it's just a few yards to the bus stop and the contented journey back into Sheffield.

You've expereince some of the running highlights of The Outdoor City, we know you'll have enjoyed them!
