indoor climbing guide- climbing worksClimbing in Sheffield isn't all about the crags and grit at its borders. Just as well, too, with the weather being as temperamental as it is here. But with five indoor walls to its name, Sheffield never leaves its climbing community yearning for an ascent or a bouldering problem, even on the most miserable of days. Many have special kids areas and cafes, making them perfect for all the family. Offering guidance on technique and kit, these walls are also the ideal places for beginners to get to grips with the sport before heading out to Stanage and the likes.

The Foundry
Indoor climbing walls in the UK can be dated back to the opening of The Foundry in 1991. The wall set the standards for hundreds of others across the country, and its varied surfaces and routes (including a kids' circuit) mean it's still well renowned amongst the most expert of climbers. The centre is conveniently situated in Sheffield's buzzing Kelham Island District, with some amazing pubs and restaurants on the doorstep.

Climbing Works
When it opened in 2006, the Works was the world's biggest bouldering centre. Today, it has it all: good coffee, a great soundtrack, free improver classes, loads of surfaces, and even a mini wall reserved for children and newbies. It's also the home of the renowned Climbing Works International Festival which takes place in March each year.

Awesome Walls
The UK is home to one of four Awesome Walls centres and Sheffield boasts the biggest of these. Here, there's opportunity to tackle over 300 routes at all grades, practice in two bouldering areas, and entertain kids in a special space-themed zone. Awesome Walls Sheffield was the first ever climbing centre to be awarded 'National Performance Centre' status by the BMC.

The Depot Climbing - Sheffield
Opened in April 2019, Sheffield's newest climbing centre is the biggest bouldering centre in the UK! The Climbing Depot has been built from the ground up to provide a world class facility with hundreds of problems, huge competition wall, professional coaching, cafe, specialist shop  and  a dedicated strength and conditioning gym.

The Matrix
It's part of the University of Sheffield's Goodwin Sports Centre, but the Matrix bouldering wall is open to the general public and students alike. The large wall is less of a social centre than some of the others, but it's a great place to set your mind to problems, which are reset regularly.
