Football Stories: portraits of football in Sheffield

Sheffield is home to the world’s oldest football club, the world’s oldest football derby and the oldest football trophy, many of the game’s laws were established in the city, and Arthur Warton, the world’s first black professional footballer, played for Sheffield United. Sheffield is a football city.

Between April and July 2016, the Football Stories project set about exploring Sheffield, the home of football. A collaboration between David Forrest at the University of Sheffield, Eleven Design, Our Favourite Places and photographer Gemma Thorpe, Football Stories talked to football people in the city today and told their stories in a book and exhibition at September's Festival of the Mind. The project is a wonderful celebration of Sheffield's many football communities.

You can see some of Gemma's photos below – click the images below to go to the Football Stories site to read about each person or team, or order the book for £2 via Our Favourite Places.
