Buying bike bits online may seem like the easy option – particularly if you’re sat in front of a screen for much of the day, seeking distraction. But nothing can beat the lure of a potter around a good bike shop.
From the old ones, with boxes of dusty Cycling News magazines by the door or intriguing day-glo lycra hidden behind the clothes rail, to their stylishly stocked younger cousins: a good bike shop acts as part showroom, part drop-in centre for those inclined to spend every spare minute out on the roads on two wheels. It’s a place to go and drool over potential future purchases, get sympathy for that annoying creaking pedal or dodgy spoke, listen to the latest cycling gossip, and hear honest advice from benign mechanics.
Road cyclists in Sheffield are well-served by a number of independent bike shops, some of which have been around since way back. Here’s our guide to the best.
Dating back to 1890, Langsett is one of the country’s oldest bike shops. The Langsett Cycle Team was first set up to compete in the Langsett Road Race (1951-1967) and was once the team of world champion Steve Peat. Though disbanded in the 1990s, a new team was recently established. The associated shop on Infirmary Road is huge, filled with all manner of bikes and gear, for all ages.
On Greystones Road, La Bicicleta is the bicycle equivalent of a Saville Row tailors, with lycra and carbon fibre in place of pinstripes and checks. Don’t be put off though: this is Sheffield, not London, and owner Alex offers friendly, knowledgeable service to roadies and triathletes.
Would you rather buy a bike made on the cheap a million miles away that falls apart after a couple of years, or a handmade work of art that may well last longer than your own legs? If it’s the latter, pay a visit to Nigel Wilson’s Mr Ben-style shop on City Road for expert advice on all things two-wheeled.
Packed to the rafters with spokes and spare parts, this charming little shop amidst the cafes of Abbeydale Road was opened by Albert Edward Butterworth in the 1930s, and has been in the family ever since.
